

Research revealed the challenge: limited resources, remote areas and historical practice were shaping environmentally harmful garbage disposal among Navajo Nation communities. Waste breakdown no longer a given with modern trash, the Navajo Nation EPA's goal was to minimize illegal open dumping and trash burning by appealing to Navajo values. The solution was tapping the rich Navajo culture with an appeal to waste disposal at local transfer stations.
